A Raspberry Pi is a complete computer with inputs and outputs typical of a regular desktop computer, except that it can be as small as the size of a credit card.
We found the Raspberry Pi especially useful for interfacing to legacy systems such as lab equipment running on RS232, RS485 or USB with non standard data encapsulation.
The Raspberry Pi can be used for high performance applications because the same development tools such as C++ and the C++ boost libraries are available on it. The resultant programs are compiled into machine instructions that run directly on the bare metal, typically a variant of the ARM processor.
